  • J.J. Howland: Done in Tampa Bay

The Buccaneers cut Howland from their practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.

The undrafted rookie out of Yale was signed to Tampa Bay's practice squad less than two weeks ago, but he'll now have to look for another opportunity elsewhere. He caught four of six targets for 88 yards with the Buccaneers this preseason.

  • J.J. Howland: Pops up on practice squad

The Buccaneers signed Howland to the practice squad Wednesday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

The undrafted rookie out of Yale will get a chance to continue his development in Tampa Bay. He flashed athleticism in the preseason while securing four of six targets for 88 yards.

  • J.J. Howland: Waived by Tampa Bay

The Buccaneers waived Howland on Tuesday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

Howland signed with the Buccaneers in May as an undrafted free agent out of Yale, where he caught 16 passes for 238 yards and two scores during his final collegiate campaign. The 6-foot-6 tight end had a strong preseason, catching four of six targets for 88 yards, so he could be a candidate to join the team's practice squad if he clears waivers.

  • Buccaneers' J.J. Howland: Splash play in preseason finale

Howland parlayed his only target into a 46-yard reception in the Buccaneers' 27-10 preseason loss to the Colts on Saturday night.

Howland connected with Kyle Trask down the seam for his one reception, and that catch enabled the undrafted rookie from Yale to post a team-high yardage figure. Howland finished his three-season college tenure with the Bulldogs having forged a modest 34-564-4 line across 21 games, but his 16.6 yards per catch and the athleticism he's flashed this preseason could make him a very strong practice squad candidate.

  • Buccaneers' J.J. Howland: Impressive in preseason opener

Howland brought in three of four targets for 42 yards in the Buccaneers' 26-24 preseason loss to the Dolphins on Saturday night.

The undrafted rookie put together a noteworthy line in his first taste of NFL action, with the highlight a 29-yard grab that qualified as the Buccaneers' longest reception of the night. The Yale product admittedly is fighting an uphill battle for a roster spot with Kyle Rudolph, Cameron Brate and Cade Otton seemingly locked into the top three slots at tight end, with that potentially being the maximum number of players the team keeps at the position. For the moment, Greg Auman of The Athletic projects Howland will be a candidate for the practice squad if he continues to impress in the final two exhibitions.
