  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Goes to 60-day IL

The Marlins placed Garrett (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Cal Quantrill, who signed a one-year contract with the Marlins in a corresponding move. Garrett underwent UCL revision surgery with an internal brace on his left elbow in December and will be sidelined for the entire 2025 season.

  • Marlins' Cal Quantrill: Gets MLB contract from Miami

The Marlins signed Quantrill to a one-year, $3.5 million contract Wednesday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.

Quantrill was non-tendered by the Rockies earlier this offseason after posting a 4.98 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 110:69 K:BB over 148.1 innings covering 29 starts in 2024. The 30-year-old did have a solid stretch with the Guardians from 2021 to 2022, posting a 3.16 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 336 regular-season innings, although his 4.10 FIP during that span was more indicative of how he pitched. Quantrill should slide into a Marlins rotation that lacks established options at the back end.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Completes live BP session

Alcantara (elbow) threw his first live batting practice session of spring training Wednesday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.

The Marlins' willingness to let Alcantara face off against hitters in the first week of spring training suggests that he experienced no setbacks over the offseason while he completed the final stages of his recovery from his Oct. 6, 2023 Tommy John surgery. Miami could still elect to slow play Alcantara's integration into the Grapefruit League pitching schedule as a matter of caution, but the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner looks well on his way to being ready to go for Opening Day. Alcantara could struggle to immediately recapture his pre-surgery velocity and command, though the fact that his arm operation was more than 16 months ago should help his chances of regaining form more quickly than if he was attempting to return on a shorter recovery timeframe.

  • Marlins' Andrew Nardi: Dealing with lower-back injury

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Wednesday that Nardi is dealing with lower-back inflammation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

McCullough revealed last week that Nardi would be behind schedule at the start of camp, but he didn't disclose the nature of the injury at the time. The good news is the injury is not related to the elbow issue that caused the lefty to miss the final five-plus weeks of the 2024 season. If healthy, Nardi will be in the mix for high-leverage innings in the Marlins' bullpen.

  • Marlins' Ronny Henriquez: Claimed by Miami

The Marlins claimed Henriquez off waivers from the Twins on Tuesday.

Henriquez has made 19 regular-season appearances at the major-league level, posting a 2.90 ERA and 24:8 K:BB over 31 innings. The 24-year-old does not have minor-league options remaining, so he will either be on the Marlins' Opening Day roster or have to go through waivers again.

  • Marlins' Xzavion Curry: Designated for assignment

The Marlins designated Curry for assignment Tuesday.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver claim Ronny Henriquez. Curry holds a career 4.35 ERA and 98:43 K:BB over 147 innings covering parts of three major-league seasons. He stands a decent chance of clearing waivers.

  • Marlins' Janson Junk: Joins club on minor-league pact

Junk signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Monday.

Junk's deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, where he'll get the chance to compete for a spot in Miami's Opening Day bullpen. The 29-year-old has seen MLB action in each of the last four campaigns, but he hasn't covered more than 17 innings in any of those seasons while bouncing around across five different organizations. Over his 15 career MLB appearances (seven starts) spanning 40 innings, Junk owns a 6.75 ERA and 1.78 WHIP.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Throwing bullpens

Perez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, working in his changeup along with fastballs, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The young right-hander is aiming to rejoin the Marlins' rotation around the All-Star break after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. "I'll say I feel very good right now," Perez said after Friday's session. "I will say 75 percent, just to put it out there in a number. But we're doing very well, just getting better." Perez began playing catch last September, and so far his recovery is proceeding as planned. In his absence, Valente Bellozo, Max Meyer and Adam Mazur are the leading candidates to fill out the back of Miami's rotation.

  • Marlins' Brian Navarreto: Inks MiLB contract with Miami

The Marlins signed Navarreto to a minor-league contract Friday, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.

The deal does not include an invitation to big-league camp during spring training, Navarreto, 30, put up a .565 OPS over 40 games at Triple-A Nashville in the Brewers organization in 2024. His only major-league experience came with the Marlins during a two-game cup of coffee in 2020.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Aiming for 60 stolen bases

Edwards said Friday that his goal is to steal 60 bases this season, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.

Edwards pilfered 31 bags while being caught only four times over 70 games with the Marlins in 2024, so it's not unreasonable to think he could get to 60 stolen bases in 2025 if he has a full, healthy season. The 25-year-old speedster is light on power but should be an asset in the steals and batting average categories in 2025.

  • Marlins' Andrew Nardi: Will be behind at start of camp

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Friday that Nardi (elbow) will be behind at the start of spring training after something flared up over the offseason, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

McCullough didn't disclose the nature of the injury, but it's probably safe to assume it's related to the left elbow injury that caused Nardi to miss the final five-plus weeks of the 2024 season. The skipper noted that the team is still waiting for further clarity on the severity of Nardi's injury. If healthy, Nardi could be in the mix for saves in 2025. He held a 5.07 ERA but a 70:18 K:BB over 49.2 innings last season.

  • Marlins' Jesus Tinoco: In saves mix heading into camp

Tinoco will compete with Calvin Faucher for the Marlins' closer job this spring, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Faucher took over the job last August and proceeded to convert six straight save chances before blowing one against the Nationals on Sept. 4 and subsequently landing on the IL with a shoulder impingement that ended his season. In his absence, Tinoco got a look in the ninth inning and performed fairly well, going 3-for-4 in his September save chances with a 2.61 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB over 10.1 innings. Faucher will likely get the first chance to secure the role, but if he stumbles early, Tinoco figures to be the next man up once again. Southpaw Andrew Nardi (elbow) could also be in the saves mix if he shows that he's healthy and can regain his 2023 form.

  • Marlins' Calvin Faucher: Could be favorite to close

Faucher will head into spring training as the favorite to close for the Marlins, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 29-year-old right-hander took over the closer role in early August last season and recorded six saves in eight chances, finishing the year with a 3.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and solid 26.8 percent strikeout rate, but he missed most of September with a shoulder impingement. In his absence, Jesus Tinoco went 3-for-4 in save chances over the final weeks of the campaign, and Tinoco likely represents Faucher's biggest competition for ninth-inning work. Southpaw Andrew Nardi (elbow) could also be in the saves mix if he shows that he's healthy and can regain his 2023 form.

  • Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Drawing raves from new skipper

New Marlins manager Clayton McCullough believes Cabrera can take a big step forward this season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 26-year-old has never been lacking in raw arm talent and has struck out 225 batters in 196 innings over the last two seasons, but Cabrera's shaky control and command have been the main thing holding him back so far during his big-league career, along with an inability to stay healthy. Despite McCullough's enthusiasm, it's hard to get too excited about Cabrera as a fantasy asset given his 4.95 ERA, 4.68 FIP and 1.40 HR/9 in 2024, but the Marlins are in dire need of quality innings and the right-hander is locked into a rotation spot as long as he can avoid another trip to the IL.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Aiming to return by All-Star break

Perez (elbow) is hoping to rejoin the Marlins' rotation by the All-Star break, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 21-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last April, so a July 2025 return would be right on schedule. Perez displayed his considerable upside over 19 starts during his big-league debut in 2023, striking out 108 batters over 91.1 innings en route to a 3.15 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. but a Marlins team that's highly unlikely to be in playoff contention in 2025 won't have much incentive to be aggressive with his recovery timeline.

  • Marlins' Victor Mesa: Could win MLB job this spring

Mesa is out of minor-league options and will get a chance to win a spot on the 26-man roster this spring, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Signed out of Cuba as a 17-year-old back in 2018, Mesa didn't show signs of emerging as a viable big leaguer until 2023 at Double-A Pensacola, and he built on that performance last year with Triple-A Jacksonville, slashing .259/.319/.430 with 13 home runs in 80 games. More importantly, he continued to display palatable plate discipline, posting a 21.7 percent strikeout rate for Jacksonville against a 7.9 percent walk rate. While the Marlins' current front office doesn't have anything invested in Mesa as a prospect, he has the potential to be the team's best current option in center field ahead of the likes of Dane Myers and Derek Hill, both of whom profile better as reserve outfielders and bench players. If Mesa can flash his upside this spring, Miami would have little to lose by giving him a long look.

  • Marlins' Derek Hill: In mix for starting CF job

Hill is expected to compete with Dane Myers for the Marlins' starting job in center field, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Both players hit from the right side, so a traditional platoon isn't on the table, but some sort of timeshare might be the most likely outcome of the spring job battle. Hill saw action for three different big-league teams in 2024, compiling a modest .241/.271/.420 slash line between the Giants, Rangers and Marlins with seven homers and six steals in 172 plate appearances, but he has more experience in center field than Myers does and might be the more reliable defender. Victor Mesa, who once had some prospect cache in the Marlins' system and showed signs of improvement at Triple-A last year, is out of minor-league options and could also push his way into the competition with a strong spring.

  • Marlins' Dane Myers: Will compete for CF job

Myers is expected to compete with Derek Hill for the Marlins' starting job in center field, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Both players hit from the right side, so a traditional platoon isn't on the table, but some sort of timeshare might be the most likely outcome of the spring job battle. Myers has a career .265/.315/.407 slash line in the majors with four homers and five steals over 178 plate appearances and might offer more offense than Hill, but he has less experience at the position and saw more action in right field than center in 2024. Victor Mesa, 23, who once had some prospect cache in the Marlins' system and showed signs of improvement at Triple-A last year, is out of minor-league options and could also push his way into the competition with a strong spring.

  • Marlins' Agustin Ramirez: Chance to claim starting job

Ramirez is expected to begin the season with Triple-A Jacksonville, but a strong performance in spring training could force the Marlins' hands, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

The headliner in the Jazz Chisholm deal with the Yankees last year, Ramirez slashed .250/.351/.419 in 68 games between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Jacksonville at the Triple-A level with nine homers and nine steals, but he performed much better in the Marlins' system after the trade, posting an .829 OPS in 163 plate appearances for Jacksonville compared to a .692 mark for Scranton. Miami will be in no rush to start his service clock, but the team also has very little standing in his way at catcher, with Nick Fortes having failed to reach a .600 OPS in either of the last two seasons. If Ramirez stands out in camp, the Marlins could consider accelerating the timeline for the 23-year-old.

  • Marlins' Jonah Bride: Tenuous hold on starting job

Bride will head into training camp at the top of the Marlins' depth chart at first base, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

However, the 29-year-old could face a serious challenge this spring from former Cub prospect Matt Mervis, who has significantly more power potential. Bride provided Miami with a solid bat after joining the big-league roster for good in late July last season, slashing .279/.365/.485 over 241 plate appearances with 11 homers in only 58 games, but his career track record suggests he could have a hard time matching that output over a full campaign. Bride and Mervis could also end up platooning at first base, with Bride on the short side, if rookie slugger Deyvison De Los Santos wins the DH job this spring.
