  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Faces batters Tuesday

Jameson (elbow) faced live batters Tuesday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

This was Jameson's first time facing hitters since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. The Diamondbacks will monitor the right-hander's recovery from the session before determining the next steps.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Exam coming Wednesday

Montgomery will have his strained left index finger examined Wednesday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Montgomery, who was scheduled to begin throwing by midweek, is expected to initiate an already mapped out plan shortly following Wednesday's exam. The Diamondbacks enjoy good starting depth, and it's uncertain whether the left-hander will be part of the rotation. His eventual role will depend on which version of Montgomery shows up: the 2023 iteration (3.20 ERA) that helped Texas win the World Series, or the pitcher that signed with Arizona late in the spring of 2024 and pitched to a 6.23 ERA.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Planned for spring opener

Manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Burnes will start Friday's spring opener against the Rockies, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Burnes, who worked the spring opener for Baltimore in 2024, wants the ball for his new team's Cactus League opener and will get it. The right-hander signed a six-year, $210 million deal with the Diamondbacks in December and appears primed to step in as the staff ace.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Sticking in Arizona

Perdomo agreed to a four-year, $45 million contract extension with the Diamondbacks on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

The club is getting a great deal on Perdomo's services in 2025 after agreeing to a $2.55 million contract to avoid arbitration. That number will jump to $5 million in 2026, $8 million in 2027, $11 million in 2028 and $13 million in 2029, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The 25-year-old shortstop is coming off the best season of his young big-league career, batting .273 with three home runs, 37 RBI, nine stolen bases on 10 attempts and 61 runs scored over 98 games. Perdomo's combination of strong shortstop defense and good plate skills (11.3 percent walk rate, .349 OBP over the last two years) allows him to provide more real-life value than fantasy value.

  • Diamondbacks' Seth Martinez: Booted from 40-man roster

The Diamondbacks designated Martinez for assignment Monday.

Martinez was cast off the 40-man roster with the Diamondbacks needing to clear a spot for newly signed right-hander Kendall Graveman (shoulder). The Diamondbacks had previously claimed Martinez off waivers earlier this offseason after he held a 3.59 ERA and 36:18 K:BB across 52.2 frames for Houston in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Druw Jones: To open in High-A

The Diamondbacks plan to have Jones begin the 2025 season at High-A Hillsboro, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Jones played a full season at Single-A Visalia in 2024 after injuries limited him the previous two years. The 2022 second-overall pick had issues early in the season but finished strong with a line of .275/.409/.405 along with six home runs, 65 RBI and 21 steals over 109 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Cooking up cutter

Henry said Sunday that he's been working on adding a cutter to his repertoire during the offseason, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. The left-hander is adding a sixth pitch to his mix, which also includes a four-seamer, curveball, sinker, changeup and slider.

Henry said the cutter is still a work-in-progress, and the end goal is for it to speed up right-handed batters and make lefties pause when delivered. Change is needed, after both righties and lefties teed off on Henry, who opened the 2024 season in Arizona's rotation before eventually being optioned to Triple-A Reno. The 27-year-old finished with a 7.04 ERA over nine outings (seven starts) for the Diamondbacks. Arizona now has a surplus of starting pitching ahead of Henry, who is likely to begin 2025 at Reno, for whom he has a respectable 4.20 ERA over three seasons in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: More days off in 2025

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged Sunday that he may need to give Gurriel more time off this season, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. "I get monster-locked on not giving position players off because they get hot or whatever, but I've got to pick some good days for him to keep him strong and healthy this year," the manager said.

Gurriel, who played 145 games in 2023, was on pace for a similar number last season before a September calf injury limited his availability as Arizona made a push for the postseason. The 31-year-old outfielder experienced a drop in slugging (.435, 61st in MLB) and ranked 114th with 42 extra-base hits in 2024, which might be a factor in the manager's desire to give Gurriel more time off. Lovullo's goal of keeping him healthy through the course of the season is a prudent one, but fantasy manager can still expect Gurriel to receive the bulk of the playing time in left field.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Signs with Arizona

Miller agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Sunday that includes an invite to big-league camp, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Miller signed with the Tigers for 2024 and had a 4.53 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 49:13 K:BB across 55.2 innings before being released late in the regular season. A 3.75 xERA indicates the 34-year-old may have deserved some better results, and he should have a decent chance of earning a spot in Arizona's Opening Day bullpen.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Set to throw soon

Montgomery (finger) is scheduled to have a throwing session Tuesday or Wednesday, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.

The left-hander was diagnosed with a strain of his left index finger Thursday and has been shut down for a few days, but he's expected to be back throwing soon. Montgomery should have enough time to be fully built up for the start of the regular season if he can avoid setbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Makes pre-swing adjustments

Diamondbacks hitting coach Joe Mather said Friday that Thomas worked on his pre-swing activity during the offseason, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Specifically, Thomas' adjustments included a slightly lower leg kick along with being more consistent with his stride and direction. He feels the cleaner mechanics will result in hard line drives with gap-to-gap power. Thomas hit the ball with authority last season but mostly on the ground (60.8 groundball percentage). The outfielder, who is healthy entering spring training after missing significant time in 2024, begins camp as the No. 2 center fielder and will compete with Jake McCarthy for the starting job.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Bench role unlikely

Lawlar is unlikely to win a bench role during spring training, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Lawlar is nominally in the mix for a backup infielder role in camp, but given the time he missed in 2024 -- injuries limited him to 14 games -- having him serve in a part-time role is "probably not what's in his best interest," per Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen. The roster spot should be a battle between Garrett Hampson and Blaze Alexander, with non-roster invitees Grae Kessinger, Ildemaro Vargas and Connor Kaiser also in the mix.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Out of options

Herrera is out of minor-league options as he prepares to compete for the backup catcher job in spring training, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

That Herrera is out of options gives him an advantage in the quest to back up primary catcher Gabriel Moreno. Herrera's advanced defense is another edge over Adrian Del Castillo, who crushed the ball during his MLB debut last season. It's likely the Diamondbacks have Del Castillo head back to Triple-A Reno to hone his defense, while Herrera, who has earned trust in the Arizona clubhouse, grabs a roster spot for Opening Day.

  • Diamondbacks' Kendall Graveman: Signs one-year pact with Arizona

The Diamondbacks signed Graveman (shoulder) to a one-year, $1.35 million contract Friday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

The deal could reach $3.3 million if he hits all of his incentives. Graveman underwent right shoulder surgery in January of 2024 to repair a torn labrum and clean up his rotator cuff. He is now considered fully healthy, although the Diamondbacks figure to ease him into things in spring training. If he's healthy and able to regain his pre-surgery form, Graveman could be part of the late-inning bullpen mix in Arizona. The 34-year-old has a 2.74 ERA and 193:82 K:BB over 187.1 innings since 2021, when he became a full-time reliever.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Not yet throwing

Imaging revealed a strain in Montgomery's left index finger Thursday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

The Diamondbacks don't seem too concerned about Montgomery's finger, but they'll hold off on having him throw for now and see how he feels in a few days. The 32-year-old southpaw also reported shedding 20 to 25 pounds over the offseason, as he's determined to bounce back from a 2024 campaign that was easily the worst of his career.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Cuts weight over offseason

Montgomery said Thursday that he lost 20 to 25 pounds over the offseason, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Montgomery appears motivated following a disastrous 2024 campaign which saw him collect a 6.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 83:44 K:BB across 117 innings. It's been no secret that the Diamondbacks have attempted to trade the lefty this offseason, but his $22.5 million salary has made that difficult. Arizona plans to operate with a traditional five-man rotation again in 2025, which could mean Montgomery being used in long relief if he's still with the club on Opening Day.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Set to throw off mound Wednesday

Jameson (elbow) said that he will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Jameson missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in September 2023. Though he had been able to throw off a mound by July of last season, Jameson is presumably doing so with more velocity and better command this spring now that he's further removed from the elbow procedure. The Diamondbacks could still ease Jameson along more slowly in spring training than their other healthy pitchers, but the 27-year-old right-hander said that there's "no question" he'll ready for Opening Day. If Jameson clinches a spot on the season-opening roster, he'll likely be used in lower-leverage situations initially, but he could quickly move up the pecking order in an Arizona bullpen that looks relatively unsettled.

  • Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Part of camp battle

Thomas enters spring training listed second on Arizona's depth chart in center field.

Jake McCarthy, who was in Thomas' shoes at the start of camp in 2024, is listed as the starting center fielder and deserves to be. Thomas suffered through an injury marred season and barely hit when healthy (.603 OPS). Meanwhile, McCarthy was a competent fill-in during the first half and eventually exploded in July/August (.878 OPS). The Diamondbacks don't lose much in the way of defense with McCarthy -- though Thomas is clearly the best outfield defender on the team -- and the former's bat has been an asset in addition to his work on the basepaths (74 steals from 2022 to 2024). Thomas hit the ball hard last year, but a lot of it was on the ground. If the 24-year-old shows improvement at the plate during spring training, that could force a decision for manager Torey Lovullo.

  • Diamondbacks' John Curtiss: Signs with Arizona

Curtiss signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training.

Most of Curtiss' time last season was spent at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he turned in a 3.96 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 50 regular-season frames. However, his recent performance in the majors hasn't been as successful, as he's surrendered 14 earned runs in 22 regular-season innings since 2023. He'll have an opportunity to earn a spot at the end of Arizona's bullpen during spring training, but chances are he reports to Triple-A Reno to begin the 2025 campaign.
