Osleivis Basabe's 2024 season was truncated by a wrist fracture that limited him to 78 games between his rehab assignment in the Complex League and Triple-A Durham. Basabe has now amassed nearly 2,000 plate appearances in the minor leagues, and does have a .301 average along with a .359 OBP, as he has shown strong bat to ball skills throughout the minor leagues. The challenge has been that skill has not translated to the big leagues, as he looked rather overmatched when we last saw him in 2023, and the club never promoted him last season despite his return from injury in mid-July. Basabe was traded to the Giants in February after being designated for assignment, which gives him a more difficult path to immediate playing time in the majors. He is still just 24 years old and not yet out of minor league options, but 2025 could be a make or break season.

  • Giants' Osleivis Basabe: Cut from big-league camp

The Giants optioned Basabe (shoulder) to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday. After reaching the majors with the Rays in 2023 and appearing in 31 games, Basabe spent the entire 2024 campaign in the minors and struggled during his time in the International League, slashing .248/.293/.336 over 283 plate appearances. The Giants acquired him in February and handed him a spot on the 40-man roster, but Basabe was unlikely to break camp even a strained right shoulder hadn't kept him from playing in the Cactus League since Feb. 25. If he's healthy to begin the minor-league season, Basabe should be in line to handle a near-everyday role with Triple-A Sacramento.

  • Giants' Osleivis Basabe: Dealing with shoulder strain

Basabe will not throw for a few days after being diagnosed with a right shoulder strain, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. It's not clear how or when Basabe was hurt, but the Giants do not seem overly concerned about the injury at this time. That said, the injury could impact Basabe's chances at winning a utility role, which already had seemed pretty low.

  • Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Booted from 40-man roster

The Rays designated Basabe for assignment Monday, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Alex Faedo. Basabe, 24, missed a large chunk of the 2024 season with a fractured wrist, slashing just .248/.293/.336 over 66 contests during his time at Triple-A Durham. He has minor-league options left and could draw interest from a team looking for utility depth.

  • Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Returns from Triple-A IL

Triple-A Durham reinstated Basabe (wrist) from the 7-day injured list Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Basabe has been shelved for most of this season after suffering a fractured right wrist back in mid-April, but he's ready to play for Durham again after completing a 12-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate, during which he posted a .945 OPS. posting a .945 OPS and a 9:1 BB:K. The 23-year-old had started games at shortstop, second base and third base with Durham before getting hurt and should go back to bouncing around the infield at the Triple-A level.

  • Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Out with fractured wrist

Triple-A Durham placed Basabe on its 7-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured right wrist, Triple-A Durham radio play-by-play broadcaster Patrick Kinas reports. Basabe suffered the injury Tuesday, when he was hit by a pitch in his lone plate appearance during Durham's 7-4 loss to Worcester. The Rays haven't indicated whether Basabe's injury will require surgery, but given that he throws and bats from the right side, he'll likely be headed for a multi-week absence even if he doesn't require a procedure. Basabe, who appeared in 31 games for Tampa Bay last season and retains a spot on the Rays' 40-man roster, was hitting .224/.270/.276 over 63 plate appearances with Durham before being shut down with the injury.

  • Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Back in lineup

Basabe (head) is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Friday's spring game against the Pirates, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. • Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Losing work to Taylor Walls

Basabe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Basabe is on the bench for a second straight game and appears to have lost hold of the everyday role at shortstop after Taylor Walls was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday. Though Basabe manned shortstop in Friday's 3-2 loss, Walls will pick up a second consecutive start Sunday in place of the rookie. Since he was called up from Triple-A Durham on Aug. 12 to replace Wander Franco (personal) as the Rays' primary option at shortstop, Basabe has slashed .250/.316/.365 with one home run and nine RBI across his first 57 big-league plate appearances.

Basabe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 22-year-old is off to a hot start to his big-league career, going 10-for-33 (.303 average) with a home run, three doubles, eight RBI and eight runs through his first eight games. Basabe is one of Tampa Bay's top prospects, and before going 1-for-3 with a double and a run in his big-league debut Sunday, he hit .294 and posted a .769 OPS over 94 games with Triple-A Durham.

  • Rangers' Osleivis Basabe: Hitting at every stop

Basabe batted a combined .323/.352/.398 over 37 games between the AZL Rangers and short-season Spokane in 2019. Basabe, who batted .344/.414/.474 and finished third as a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League in 2018, continued to hit in the lower levels of the minors since signing out of Venezuela in 2017. The only downside of the move to the States was a drop in walk rate, but the 19-year-old didn't strike out much while hitting more line drives and flyballs. Defensively, the organization introduced the young shortstop to second and third base, potentially giving him more paths to the majors.
