Though he had been able to throw off a mound by July of last season, Jameson is presumably doing so with more velocity and better command this spring now that he's further removed from the elbow procedure. The Diamondbacks could still ease Jameson along more slowly in spring training than their other healthy pitchers, but the 27-year-old right-hander said that there's "no question" he'll ready for Opening Day. If Jameson clinches a spot on the season-opening roster, he'll likely be used in lower-leverage situations initially, but he could quickly move up the pecking order in an Arizona bullpen that looks relatively unsettled.

Jameson was part of a bullpen crew that logged seven scoreless frames after starter Brandon Pfaadt allowed six runs in two-plus innings. For Jameson, it was his fourth consecutive scoreless, multi-inning appearance, and over that stretch he's given up seven hits and one walk over 9.1 innings with 10 strikeouts. The right-hander has a 2.61 ERA out of the bullpen since being called up from Triple-A Reno in late May. The Diamondbacks are expected to be in the market for starting pitching, but until they land one, Jameson has a path back into the rotation. He's thrown 20.2 innings over eight relief appearances, so it wouldn't take long to stretch him out.
Jameson struck out one over two scoreless and hitless relief innings in Sunday's 12-3 loss to Cleveland.
Jameson gave the Diamondbacks length after starter Zach Davies was removed during the fourth inning. It was the second consecutive appearance in which Jameson threw multiple innings following a short outing from a starter -- he cleaned up for Ryne Nelson on Thursday. Jameson has been used as a long reliever since being called up May 27 but has made spot starts for Arizona and five starts while at Triple-A Reno prior to his current stint with the D-backs. While Arizona appears to be cruising atop the NL West, the back end of the rotation is shaky. Outside of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the team's starters have a 6.18 ERA over 43 starts. If manager Torey Lovullo is contemplating change, Jameson is already in house. The right-hander has a 3.45 ERA over 15.2 innings (six relief outings) since returning to MLB.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described Davies' injury as "more than a (Grade) 1," with a Grade 1 strain being the least severe. Jameson excelled in his first start as a replacement for Davies, shutting down the Brewers over four scoreless innings last Wednesday. His next expected start is Tuesday in St. Louis. Jameson pitched as a starter in spring training -- he eventually lost out on the No. 5 job to Ryne Nelson -- and should be able to build up higher pitch counts and get deeper into games.
