Fermin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Tigers.
The 29-year-old backstop supplied the only offense of the afternoon for the Royals, spoiling Casey Mize's shutout bid by launching a seventh-inning slider over the fence in left-center field. it was Fermin's first long ball of the season, and through 12 games he's batting .214 (6-for-28) with two RBI and four runs.

Fermin made his first start of the season behind the plate. He's 0-for-5 this season. Fermin is a good defensive catcher and should continue to get plenty of reps behind the dish on days Salvador Perez plays first base or serves as the DH. Fermin will look to bounce back at the plate after he posted just a .685 OPS last season. He may not get many starts at DH this season with his step back at the plate last season and with more competition for DH duty on the roster.

Fermin is on the bench for the third time in four games, this time against a lefty (Tarik Skubal) after his previous two absences came against right-handed pitching. The Royals had been opening up regular playing time for Fermin behind the plate by using Salvador Perez at first base, but Perez has been taking on more work at catcher lately with Yuli Gurriel gaining traction as a regular in the Kansas City infield.

Fermin will be on the bench for the second day in a row, but he should be a semi-regular presence in the lineup over the final two weeks of the season while the Royals give veteran catcher Salvador Perez time off behind the plate and deploy him at first base or designated hitter.
