Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Could be back sometime in May
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Tuesday that McDermott (lat) could return before the end of May, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Working his way back from a right lat strain, McDermott will face hitters at the Orioles' spring training complex in Florida next week. He should be ready for a rehab assignment shortly after that.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that McDermott (lat) will begin his throwing progression Monday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
McDermott is recovering from what's been described as a mild lat/teres strain, but the injury still seems to be significant enough to remove him from the competition for an Opening Day rotation spot. He'll likely be limited to playing catch off flat ground for the next week before advancing to throwing bullpen sessions and eventually facing hitters. McDermott may not have enough time to get fully ramped up to pitch in games before the Orioles' Grapefruit League schedule comes to a close.

The transaction comes one day after McDermott allowed three runs over four innings in a no-decision against the Marlins in his major-league debut. Baltimore has a doubleheader versus the Blue Jays coming up Monday, so McDermott could be recalled that day to fill one of the openings in the rotation.

McDermott allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Miami on Wednesday.
McDermott was called up Wednesday to make his big-league debut after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 91.0 innings in Triple-A. The right-hander got through three scoreless frames against the Marlins but struggled in the fourth, giving up three runs on four hits, including a Josh Bell homer. That proved to be his final frame, as Baltimore brought in a reliever to begin the fifth. Though he didn't pitch particularly well, there's a good chance McDermott will get another turn in the rotation with Baltimore hosting a doubleheader against Toronto in five days.

McDermott's promotion already appeared imminent after he joined the Orioles' taxi squad in Miami on Tuesday, and Hyde confirmed that the 25-year-old righty would fill the opening in the rotation created by Cade Povich's demotion to Triple-A shortly before the All-Star break. Over 20 appearances (19 starts) at Norfolk this season, McDermott posted a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP while piling up 129 strikeouts over 91 innings. Though McDermott should be able to continue generating swings and misses in the big leagues on the back of his mid-to-upper 90s fastball and a sharp slider, control remains a concern for the young righty, who has walked 13.5 percent of the batters he's faced in the minors this season. A matchup with a weak Miami lineup at least offers McDermott a soft landing spot in his MLB debut.
