  • Donovan Solano 1B | SEA

Mariners' Donovan Solano: Expected to be used mostly at 1B

The Mariners plan to deploy Solano mostly at first base, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Solano could also be used some at third base, but he appears likely to see most of his action at first base as the short side of a platoon with Luke Raley. Seattle does not intend to use Solano at second base, per Kramer. The 37-year-old Solano slashed .286/.343/.417 with a career-high eight home runs over 96 regular-season contests for the Padres in 2024.

  • Nick Kurtz 1B | ATH

Athletics' Nick Kurtz: Invited to spring training

The Athletics have extended Kurtz an invitation to big-league camp during spring training.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Kurtz hit the ground running in his pro debut, slashing .368/.520/.763 with four homers in 12 games between Single-A Stockton and Double-A Midland. He then went on to mash in the Arizona Fall League as well with a 1.058 OPS in 13 contests. Kurtz, who will turn 22 in March, will likely go back to Midland to begin 2025 but could push to make his MLB debut late in the season if things go well.

  • Pete Alonso 1B | NYM

Pete Alonso: Expected to move on from Mets

The Mets are not expected to re-sign Alonso, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

The Mets made what Sherman describes as a "last-ditch effort" to retain Alonso by recently offering him a three-year contract in the $68 to $70 million range, which the first baseman unsurprisingly rejected. It's always possible there's a change of heart, but all signs now point to the Mets moving on from Alonso, who is third on their all-time home run list with 226. Currently, the plan is to shift Mark Vientos to first base and have Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio (knee) and Luisangel Acuna compete for the third base job.

  • Dominic Smith 1B | CIN

Yankees' Dominic Smith: Agrees to MiLB deal with NYY

The Yankees signed Smith to a minor-league deal Monday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Smith opted to enter free agency after being DFA'd by the Reds in early September. He appeared in 93 major-league games between Boston and Cincinnati during the 2024 regular season and posted a .691 OPS with six home runs, 34 RBI and 33 runs across 307 plate appearances. Smith will likely begin the 2025 campaign with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes/-Barre but could be called up to the big club if Paul Goldschmidt or Ben Rice were to miss time.

  • Donovan Solano 1B | SEA

Mariners' Donovan Solano: One-year pact with Seattle

The Mariners signed Solano to a one-year, $3.5 million contract Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

He can earn an additional $1 million in incentives. Solano turned 37 last month but had a productive 2024 campaign with the Padres, slashing .286/.343/.417 with a career-high eight home runs over 96 contests. J.P. Crawford at shortstop looks to be the only infielder currently guaranteed a starting spot with the Mariners, so Solano should play plenty, particularly against left-handed pitching. He started games at third and first base in 2024 in addition to designated hitter and also has plenty of past experience at second base.

  • Garrett Cooper 1B | BAL

Braves' Garrett Cooper: Joins Atlanta on MiLB deal

Cooper agreed to a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Sunday that includes an invitation to big-league spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Cooper had a .566 OPS in 36 games between the Red Sox and Cubs last season and spent much of the campaign at Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles organization. The 34-year-old has experience at first base and in the corner outfield, but he'll likely need a strong showing in spring training to have a chance of making the Opening Day roster.

  • Royals' Jac Caglianone: Earns spring training invite

The Royals have extended Caglianone an invitation to big-league camp during spring training, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Caglianone got in 29 games at High-A Quad Cities after being taken with the sixth overall pick of the First-Year Player Draft in 2024, but it's fairly customary for prospects of his stature to be invited to big-league camp, even if he has no chance of making the Opening Day roster. Also of note is that Caglianone -- who was a two-way player in college at Florida -- will not do any pitching in 2025, instead focusing only on hitting and playing first base.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Avoids arbitration with Blue Jays

Guerrero agreed to a one-year, $28.5 million contract with the Blue Jays on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Guerrero will return to Toronto in 2025 with a well-deserved $8.6 million raise. The 25-year-old produced a career-high .323 average last season while adding 30 home runs, 103 RBI, 98 runs scored and two stolen bases over 616 at-bats in 159 games. Guerrero finished sixth in the AL MVP voting in 2024, while his 5.5 WAR ranked 11th in the AL amongst hitters. The team has been open to potentially moving Guerrero to third base in 2025, but regardless of position, he remains one of the best players in baseball.

  • Andrew Vaughn 1B | CHW

White Sox's Andrew Vaughn: Avoids arbitration hearing

Vaughn signed a one-year, $5.85 million contract with the White Sox on Thursday to avoid arbitration, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Vaughn had a career-worst .699 OPS over 149 games in 2024 but will still receive a sizable raise in his second year of arbitration eligibility. The 26-year-old should open 2025 as Chicago's primary first baseman, but his opportunities could shrink if he continues to regress.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Avoids arbitration

The Orioles and Mountcastle avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $6.787 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Mountcastle had been in his second year of arbitration eligibility. The first baseman fell off to just 13 home runs over 124 regular-season games with the Orioles in 2024, but he should be among the beneficiaries of the left-field wall at Camden Yards being moved in this season.
