The transfer portal's winter window is closed, but the action is still coming in flurries

The NCAA transfer portal cycle for the 2025 college football season officially opened Monday, Dec. 9 and will close on Saturday, Dec. 28. Though some players have announced their intentions to transfer prior to Monday, they could not officially enter the portal until it opened.

Given that thousands of FBS players enter the portal each cycle and NIL has become a differentiating factor in player acquisition, expect to see plenty of movement this offseason in what has become one of the most important periods on the college football calendar.

Oregon 2025 QB signee entering portal

Oregon quarterback Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele, who joined the Ducks during December's early signing period, is expected to enter the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. Sagapolutele had already enrolled at Oregon and practiced with the Ducks ahead of their College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Ohio State. The No. 8 quarterback and No. 106 prospect nationally in the class of 2025, Sagapolutele was a huge win for Oregon when he flipped from California on national signing day. Georgia also made a heavy run at Sagapolutele ahead of the early signing period.

Mike Matthews remaining at Tennessee 

Tennessee wide receiver Mike Matthews will not enter the transfer portal and will return to the Vols in 2025, according to 247Sports/CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz. Matthews initially planned on entering his name into the database over the weekend. Matthews' return is huge for the Vols, who have just three scholarship wide receivers returning to the roster next season after attrition through graduation and the transfer portal. Matthews, a former top-40 prospect out of Lilburn, Georgia's Parkview High School, appeared in 11 games as a freshman and had seven catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
